The Department of Health (DoH) has launched a consultation to evaluate whether or not to continue to a provide gluten free prescription to patients diagnosed with coeliac disease. The options being considered are:
Option 1
Make no changes to the current system
Option 2
End gluten free prescriptions
Option 3
Only allow the prescribing of certain foods (e.g. bread and flour)
The consultation will be open until midday on the 22nd June.
We are very concerned about the proposed restrictions to gluten free prescribing, as the decisions are often made based on misinformed information. Coeliac disease is a lifelong condition, which if untreated, or poorly managed can have serious long term health implications, such as infertility, osteoporosis and in rare cases, small bowel cancer.
At less than £200 per year per patient, gluten free prescriptions are a cheap and effective preventative health policy. Yet misinformation about prescriptions continues to place pressure on the NHS to stop prescribing gluten free food. Coeliac UK have published an excellent article about the common myths surrounding gluten free prescribing, visit their website for the full article.
